What Is a Parts Diagram?
A parts diagram (also called a parts schematic or parts breakdown) is an illustration that shows all the individual components of an assembly in a structured visual format. Unlike a wiring diagram that shows electrical connections, a parts diagram shows physical components and how they fit together.
Parts diagrams are essential for ordering the right replacement part, understanding how an assembly goes together, and confirming which version of a component your specific vehicle or machine uses.
Reading Exploded View Diagrams
The most common parts diagram format is the exploded view — where components are drawn pulled apart from each other, showing the relationship and assembly order.
Callout Lines
Thin lines connect each component to its reference number or label. Follow these carefully in complex assemblies.
Assembly Direction
The “exploded” spacing between parts shows which direction each piece installs. Parts furthest out install last.
Quantity Indicators
Some diagrams show “x4” or “QTY: 4” next to fasteners or identical parts used multiple times in an assembly.
Sectional Views
Cut-away sections show internal components that wouldn’t be visible from the outside, like bushings inside a hub.
When disassembling, take a photo of the exploded diagram and lay parts out matching that exact layout. Reassembly becomes much simpler.
Part Numbers & Reference Codes
Every component in a parts diagram is assigned an identifier. These come in two forms:
Item Reference Numbers
Simple sequential numbers (1, 2, 3…) that correspond to a parts list table alongside or below the diagram. These are not the actual part numbers — they just identify which row in the list to look at.
OEM Part Numbers
The actual manufacturer part numbers (e.g., 11210-31060 for a Toyota engine mount). These are what you enter when ordering from a dealer or parts site. Always use the OEM number when possible — aftermarket cross-reference numbers can sometimes vary.
The same part can have different numbers across model years and production runs. Always filter by your exact year, make, model, engine size, and trim. When in doubt, use your VIN to confirm compatibility.
Types of Parts Diagrams
- Automotive OEM Diagrams — From manufacturer service portals (Toyota, Ford, GM). Most accurate for the specific model year.
- Aftermarket Parts Diagrams — From sites like RockAuto, AutoZone, or NAPA. May group similar years together.
- Appliance Diagrams — Manufacturer part sheets for dishwashers, washers, HVAC units. Usually available via model number on the brand website.
- Plumbing & Fixture Diagrams — Show toilet tank internals, faucet cartridges, valve assemblies. Available from plumbing supply brands like Moen, Kohler, American Standard.
- Small Engine Diagrams — For lawnmowers, generators, chainsaws. Available from Briggs & Stratton, Honda Power, etc.
Using Diagrams to Order Parts
- Identify the assembly — Know which system the broken part belongs to (e.g., “front suspension,” “carburetor,” “toilet fill valve”)
- Find the correct diagram — Use your model year, VIN, or model number to locate the right version
- Locate the part visually — Find it in the exploded view; note its item number
- Cross-reference the parts list — Match the item number to the OEM part number in the accompanying list
- Check superseded numbers — OEM parts sometimes get updated; the parts counter or website will show if a number has been superseded
- Confirm quantity needed — Note if the diagram shows you need more than one (e.g., 4 bolts, 2 bushings per side)
Pro Tips for Accurate Part Identification
- Use the manufacturer’s own parts portal when possible — Ford Parts, Toyota Parts, Genuine Honda Parts etc. are most accurate
- Photograph the old part before ordering — comparing shape, connection points, and size helps catch mistakes
- Note the part’s casting numbers or date codes — useful for matching factory-original specifications
- Check for TSBs — Technical Service Bulletins sometimes update part numbers due to design changes
- Ask about core charges — some assemblies (alternators, starters, brake calipers) have a returnable core deposit
